Carol Dweck on Helping Kids Move From the Tyranny of Now Into the Power of Yet …*

In this short TEDx talk, psychologist Carol Dweck gives an overview of her research on the power of mindset to facilitate or hinder children’s capacity to connect with and activate their potential. The ways in which children frame and cope with challenges and difficulties have enormous implications on their ability to thrive. Students with a fixed mindset are prisoners to the tyranny of the now, believing that each challenge is a reflection of a fixed level of a given capacity–be it intelligence, creativity or athleticism. Meanwhile, students with a growth mindset luxuriate in the power of yet, understanding that each new challenge is an opportunity to learn something new and to practice and refine skills. Dweck shares some tips and strategies for helping students move from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset–praising process rather than intelligence to help students redefine things like effort and difficulty, for example.

“If you ask a kid, ‘Can you draw?’ They answer, ‘Yeah, of course. Where are the pens?’ But if you ask an adult, they often say ‘Oh, no. I can’t draw.’ or, ‘I can only draw stick men.’ Through this infrastructure that we call the school system, or just the social system, we’ve trained creativity out of people. When you’re a kid, and if you can’t draw a house that looks like a house, then you fail. If you can’t draw a person that looks like a person, you fail. All those kids that had a crazy imagination, that were doing their own creative thing, and had their own unique style, they’re told ‘You fail, you fail, you fail.’”

Rethinking…* the Value of Play & Its Potential to Transform Education

“To be at play is an experience–you feel ideas of freedom, of being able to be creative, to make choices, to try out things, to experiment, to explore. I actually think it’s a state of being that, when you’re at play, you’re in a very different state of mind. You have a kind of openness about ideas. Definitely, when you’re at play with other people, there is an openness to what does it mean to be with these people in this space. You’re communicating with them, you’re trying to understand, “well, how can I relate to them?” “How can we do something together?” You’re always kind of pushing and pushing and exploring and feeling. Rather than a really close rule-bounded space, where you’re nervous about suggesting something or trying something or taking the next step. So that openness of that space feels incredibly important to people that are collaborating and are trying to engage in ‘what-if’ questions around what they might do together, what solutions might be to things, how they feel about each other. It’s a very very human experience.” – Katie Salen

What sites would you visit and how would you communicate with one another? Swedish artist Jonas Lund explores those questions in his most recent project We See in Every Direction. As part of Rhizome’s online exhibition series The Download, Lund built a browser that allows people around the world to surf the internet together in one window. October 6th ~ Global Day of Play

Attention rethinkers…*Nirvan Mullick, the filmmaker who made the short film (turned global phenomenon, receiving more than 7 million views) about 9-year old Caine and the cardboard arcade he built and runs out of his father’s mechanics shop, is launching a Global Day of Play on October 6th.

THE FILM THAT STARTED IT ALL

Mullick was inspired to found the Imagination Foundation whose mission is to find, foster, and fund creativity and entrepreneurship in kids and made a follow up short film to examine the impact that the film on Caine and his cardboard arcade have had on play, creativity and imagination around the country. The Imagination Foundation is also running a Global Cardboard Challenge, which ‘invites the world to build anything awesome out of cardboard, recycled materials, and imagination’. On October 6th they are hosting a Global Day of Play: ‘a world-wide celebration of play, creativity and community’. There will be Cardboard Challenge events hosted around the world (it’s not too late to host one yourself!)

Tuesday October 2nd: Webinar with Nirvan Mullick on the power and importance of play over on ConnectedLearningTV. Mullick will be exploring the question: How is the potential for learning affected when we find, foster, and fund creativity and entrepreneurship in kids?
